There are few things that instantly would have hit everyone’s senses if we had keenly watched ‘The Gravity’. There’s a particular scene, where it’s completely out of imagination as Sandra Bullock shivers for survival in space and we find the disappeared George Clooney knocking the door. A completely unimaginable and the peaked artificiality, but still it worked out with the world audience. So is the placement of relationship between Pariyerum Perumal (Kathir) and his close to heart Karuppi. It might look somewhat gory to have a heart-wrenching start, but to have a groovy dimension by the end is something that leaves you in an instant applause. This in fact, diverts itself from the devastating pictorial of Ram in ‘Kattradhu Tamizh’. In such a manner, we can definitely appreciate filmmaker Mari Selvaraj.

The film owns a same paradigm of a caste based issue that pops up in every movie from this genre. We see Kathir as Pariyerum Perumal, an aspiring law college student, who even writes B.A B.L beside his name. He encounters bizarre of devastating incidents in Law College, where he is pushed into pits of shame by students belonging to upper caste people. Things get more complicated, when his acquaintance with his classmate Jyoti Mahalakshmi (Anandi) gets closer. The characterizations in the film are completely substantial, which keeps us engrossed in many places. More than the narration, it’s the dialogues and characters that offer us some impact. Be it negative or positive, they are very well etched. The humorous Yogi Babu, who appears as a much improvised version than being a routine witty line speaker or the old aged merciless killer in the name of ‘God’ are completely commendable. However, the innocent shades of Kayal Anandhi look slightly artificial.

The hardcore reality that brings up the unjust activities that happen across many villages and towns in the name of caste are very well projected. One of the admirable thing is that by the end of film, we aren’t sent back home with annoyance of tragedy, but some positivity. This is the need of hour that many filmmakers have failed to do so far in the industry till the date, but Mari Selvaraj has tried showcasing something different, which deserves special mention.

Musical score by Santhosh Narayanan is appealing in places as BGMS. But he has to change his style or else people will get literally bored. We see that his spell is identical in all the albums, but yes, Karuppi song is just amazing, which signifies pain and outcry. Cinematography is excellent, where it doesn’t turn out to be too dry or exaggerated, but well composed.

Kathir will definitely get into main league of actors shortly if he continues to work in such exceptional movies. He is definitely a performer to watch out for in years to come.

Overall, Pariyerum Perumal exhibits the hard work that every crewmember has done and the premise it brings up might look stereotypical, but then, the packaging by Mari Selvaraj, especially the final note is appreciable.

Verdict: Pariyerum Perumal doesn’t confine to the preachy zones, but instead works out well for its narrative style and brilliant performances.
